COURSE STRUCTURE
The B.El.Ed. Programme integrates the study of subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge. The programme offers compulsory and optional theory courses, compulsory practicum courses and colloquia.
Theory Courses
There are in total nineteen theory courses during the four year programme which, fall under premises of Foundation Courses, Core Courses, Pedagogy Courses and Liberal options in the disciplines of humanities, sciences, mathematics and languages. The total weightage of the theory courses in the B.El.Ed. programme is 1250 marks.
The different course types are categorized as:
The foundation courses are designed to offer an in-depth study of the processes of child development, learning, the scenario of contemporary India and how it reflects and affects the profile of the learner, the processes of school management, theoretical concepts of education and curriculum. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme has evolved through these courses. The theoretical issues are constructed through the processes of deliberation, analysis and reflection. These courses are interdisciplinary not only in knowledge reconstruction but transaction as well. Learning is viewed not as subject specific but rather issue specific. The core courses are aimed to reconstruct the concepts learnt in the school and amalgamate within multi disciplinary perspectives. The core courses are offered only in the first year. Students gain an in-depth understanding of language, thinking and learning in mathematics, review secondary school science content and examine the inter linkages between different branches of social sciences. The pedagogy courses provide the space and structure for the students in developing the necessary knowledge and skills to teach young children. The pedagogy courses in the 3rd year the student teachers for teaching at the primary level, whereas the final year pedagogy papers aim at training them to teach at the upper primary level. The liberal optional courses are designed to offer studies in a specific discipline with academic rigour. This also provides an opportunity to the students to reflect on the constant of the different disciplines from an evolving and critical perspective. LSR being a liberal arts college offers options in Mathematics, Political Science, English.
Practicum & Colloquia
The Practicum courses spread across the four years are designed such that students acquire wide range of professional experience through drama, craft, developing curricular material, systematic observation, documentation and evaluation. Colloquia is structured to include aspects of children’s literature, storytelling, organising resource centre, sharing school experiences and carries a weightage of 200 marks. The Practicum courses include-performing and fine arts and craft for the first year students, observing children, self development workshops, physical education and storytelling for the second year students, classroom management and material development for the third year students, internship and development of resource centre for the fourth year students. Practicum courses carry a total weightage of 950 marks over the four years of study.
